Capital Punishment 34 – Favourites

Wow it feels like it has been such a long time since I last shot at a Muay Thai event, and actually, it has. The last Muay Thai event I shot was Honour 9 back in November last year. This was my first Capital Punishment show, and I had a lot of fun shooting at the gig. So here are my favourite shots from the night.

Wellington Big Bash 2016 Favourites

I’m a little late on this, but I finally got to choosing my favourite shots from this event. Wellington Big Bash 2016 was my 2nd boxing shot, and I have to say that I was pleased with the results, especially upon seeing the improvements since shooting The Trade Off last year. I think a big part of it was because the ring was well lit so I had more flexibility when snapping these. I still missed cues sometimes as I’m still getting used to looking for the twitch (it’s quite different from Muay Thai fights), but overall I think I didn’t do too badly.

Below are my favourite shots from the night. Check out Silver Duck’s website to view all photos from this event.

Armageddon Expo 2016 Wellington

Oh wow! A year went by so fast, because next thing I knew Wellington Armageddon Expo was here. This time around I was at the event at a different capacity. I was there as Silver Duck working with Pixie Captured Images for Behind the Themes to cover what was going on all around the event, as well as doing a few interviews with some of the celebrities. I had never taken so many cosplay pictures at the event before, and I must say that those cosplays are amazing! The work and effort that went into each and every one of those costumes are just stunning. For all the photos taken at this event, please go here. Below are some of my favourite photos from around the events.

I really hope I’ll get the chance to explore cosplay photography, because it’s something I’ve been wanting to do for awhile, and taking photos at the event only showed that I still have a lot to learn, because it was something I’m unfamiliar with. (Keep scrolling down, there are panel & zombie alley photos as well).

Despite doing a lot of laps at the Stadium, I had time to catch some of the panels whenever I went past, as well as catching up with a few friends. Below are some photos from the panel:

Knowing that I’d most likely be busy during the event, I took the liberty to get my partner and I tickets to the opening party and the shindig, so I could have a night off and hang out with the guests as I didn’t think I’d have the chance to get their autographs (I resorted to absentee pack so I can get them) and photos with them. In the end I did get pictures with David Giuntoli, Tahmoh Penikett, and Cliff Simon on the last day (and I almost missed David and Tahmoh because I was taking photos and doing interviews).

Then there was this one time when we went through the zombie alley and Darren got mauled by the zombies :p Watch it here:

I managed to snap some awesome pictures before having to run out of there ;)

And, I also managed to get into the make up room, as the zombies were being done ;)

I had so much fun at this event, which got me buzzing for a few days afterwards. I miss my ‘geddon buddies already, but I’m sure we’ll meet again at the next one. My feet were so tired after walking lots of laps on concrete floor all day for 3 days, but it was all worth it, and I would like to once again thank Behind the Themes and Pixie Captured Images for taking me on for the task.

Honour 9 Favourites

I actually had another shoot before Honour 9, which you can find on my website over at silverduck.co.nz, from the event The Trade Off. Unfortunately I didn’t find particular shots that I could categorize as my favourite shots.

Anyway, Honour 9 happened on 14 November 2015 at the Porirua Kennel Club, Porirua, Wellington. It was a long night, with 13 fights and all went the full rounds, we had over 3,000 photos as a result of the combined effort of my partner and I. It was the first time I was running low on memory on the cards, and low on battery as well. We had spares but we didn’t expect to be needing more spares. It’s a lesson for next time though :)

So here are my favourite shots from this event (click to enlarge). To view the rest of the photos from Honour 9, click here (this will open a new window/tab and take you to my Silver Duck website’s Honour 9 posts).

Behind the scenes of “Beyond the Fridge”

We had an amazing time making “Beyond the Fridge”, we worked with such a wonderful team, and met amazing people. So here is behind the scene photos from “Beyond the Fridge”, if you haven’t watched it already, click here to watch the film.

Honour 8 Favourites

Here it is again, my favourite shots from Razor Promotions‘ fight event, Honour 8. You can find the rest of the photos from this event here (which includes shots from my partner as well).

I came across a lot of lighting problem in this particular fight event as the four lights that are normally on the corners of the ring weren’t there (there were only 2, one on the red and another on the blue corner, these were used as corner lights, as well as ring lights), and the house lights weren’t turned on. The skylight and frosted windows helped a little at the beginning, but as it got darker in the night it started to get tough to shoot.

Shot using Canon 50D, Canon 20D with 18-200mm and 50mm f1.4.

Siam 1 Favourites

Ring-side fight photography is not easy. I read so many blogs/articles on fight and ring-side photography, as well as watching a lot of photography podcasts, and stalking photography forums for tips and tricks before I did my very first ring-side shoot at Combat 1. I ran into a few challenges, but I learned a lot then, and when I was given another opportunity at Siam 1, I said yes in a heart beat. Below are my favourite photos from the fight night. Koshi Nage

I personally have a love-hate relationship with this technique, but it is no doubt a beautiful technique, and also a beautiful one to take photos of. These are my favourite two from the October 2014 grading. To view all photos, click here.

Polaroid Land Model 350

Look what I found on the photo drive! We had the pleasure to babysit this camera for awhile, and wished that we could experiment with it. The camera is now back with its owner. This is the Polaroid Automatic 350 Land Camera, it was in a very dusty condition, but otherwise it was still good.  These photos were taken by my partner.
